Slice #26, Our Weekly Call

I'm choosing to explore my identities this month, focusing on a different angle of me each day.

Today, a slice on being a daughter.

My mom is 75.  We've had many routines come and go over my lifetime, but the current one is to chat on the phone every Sunday morning.  My dad goes to church, so she is alone.  My hubby always makes a big breakfast on Sunday mornings, which gives me a little time to myself too.  It's one of those routines that rarely seems to get interrupted, which we all know is scarce.

Today, we chatted about her humidifier, her brother's birthday, my cancelled trip, my desire to do yard work all week, and our plan for Easter dinner.  It's just 20 minutes or so checking in, but is a nice start to the week.

  1. I love the recap here and get a tad sad. My mom has been gone for too long, and when she was alive, I didn't call enough. Love flowed between us—we both knew that—but as you say,"It's one of those routines that rarely seems to get interrupted, which we all know is scarce." Also, I am always warmed when I see a mother/daughter pic; in this one, you both look so sincerely happy, no sign of a posed smile. Easter dinner means you'll get together? I hope so. A hug is even better than a phone call.

  2. I am SURE the call is a highlight of your mother's week. 20 minutes of caring, listening, and sharing. SOUNDS to me like it's perfect

  3. I feel empowered reading about your exploration of your identities. What a clever way to slice during the month. Today's post pays tribute to the time you invest in being a daughter and gives back to a woman who gave so much to you.

My mother and I talk every Sunday night because that's when her mother called her (because long distance was cheaper after 7pm on Sundays!). I honor this tradition for her because I know it's special to her.
