#27 Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center

This year, I'm going to spend 31 days writing about places. In my profession, I talk about place-based writing quite a bit. I frame it like this when I share: We believe in the power of including spaces in the process of writing. Place-based writing is the concept that the place where we write may influence our thinking, impacting the writer’s perspective, engagement, ownership, and/or purpose. I'm really jazzed up, thinking about where I will spend time as a writer in 31 different spaces this month and how I can use each post to share a little slice of my day.

Today, Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center.

Is this place fictional?  Yes.  Is it going to make an impact on my thinking and writing anyway?  You betcha.

Today is the last day of spring break and the only day of the week where I haven't had stuff scheduled.  It was a rainy and chilly morning, so the task of dog walking was even taken off the to-do list.  I was quite torn on whether or not to use the day to catch up with house chores or to loaf.

I decided to start the day watching the newly released episode of The Pitt.  I made a yummy little biscuit sandwich, poured a glass of tea, and settled in.  I normally only watch this show in small 10 - 15 minute bursts while I eat lunch or something.  Today, I was committed to watching a WHOLE episode all at once.  Can I say that loafing was exactly what the Dr. ordered (I like to imagine Dr. Michael "Robby" Robinavitch ordering it)?

I won't say much about the places it took me in case there are some fellow watchers out there that haven't seen this particular episode, but it took me where it always takes me... places of empathy and less ignorance and deeper understanding of all the different kinds of humans out in the world and all of the things they might be facing on a daily basis.  It also took me to a place of rest, of rejuvenation, and of relaxation.  I needed it and have been checking things off the catch-up list ever since.

I'm often a person of 'get it done' and then relax.  Today, relaxing first was a really great choice and I'm glad Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center got me there.
