#28 Scholastic Writing Awards

This year, I'm going to spend 31 days writing about places. In my profession, I talk about place-based writing quite a bit. I frame it like this when I share: We believe in the power of including spaces in the process of writing. Place-based writing is the concept that the place where we write may influence our thinking, impacting the writer’s perspective, engagement, ownership, and/or purpose. I'm really jazzed up, thinking about where I will spend time as a writer in 31 different spaces this month and how I can use each post to share a little slice of my day. 

Today, Montminy Gallery at the Boone County History and Culture Center in Columbia, MO.

Today was a day of celebration!  I am a director at a Writing Project Site.  Our state network comes together to celebrate the student writers and winners of the Missouri region for this national writing competition.  

We rent a beautiful little gallery and display student work.  There are snacks and certificates and pins and noebooks and laughter and pride and all of this together just made my day.

I can't say enough about celebrating young writers.  Check out the competition if you've never shared it with a youngster.  Youth voices need to be out in the world.  I'm grateful for my small part in supporting this, and I'm grateful for this place to remind me how important our work as educators is.
